Modern HR, honestly described
A modern HR function usually covers:
- Talent acquisition — sourcing, screening, structured interviewing, offer negotiation.
- Onboarding — helping new employees become productive quickly.
- Compensation and benefits — salary bands, incentives, benefits programs.
- Learning and development — internal training, skill programs, career pathways.
- Performance management — reviews, feedback, calibration.
- Employee relations — handling grievances, conflicts, investigations.
- HR operations — payroll coordination, records, compliance.
- Culture and engagement — surveys, communication, values.
Depending on company size, one person may cover several of these, or entire teams may specialise in one.
What HR is not
HR is not there to police people. In healthy organisations, HR is a partner to managers — helping them hire better, coach better and make fairer decisions. Where HR is seen only as a paperwork function, both the HR team and the organisation suffer.
Skills that matter
- Clear communication, verbal and written
- Judgement under confidentiality
- Comfort with data — headcount, attrition, engagement scores
- Basic labour law and compliance
- HRIS and modern HR tools
Where HR is going
Two shifts are visible:
- People analytics — using data to inform decisions on hiring, retention and internal mobility.
- Skills-based operating models — thinking in skills rather than only roles, especially as organisations restructure around AI.
